About Vestavia Hills
The City of Vestavia Hills sits atop Shades Mountain and is home to some of the most spectacular views in the Birmingham area. From this vantage point, Shades Valley lies to the north, and the Appalachian foothills to the south. Vestavia Hills owes its scenic views to its unique topography, having Little Valley Mountain, Jones Ridge, Dolly Ridge and Rocky Ridge, Patton Creek, Little Shades Creek, and the Cahaba River within its boundaries. Vestavia is proud of their annual Dogwood Festival and Trail. These combine for some extreme changes in elevation throughout Vestavia Hills. Vestavia Hills was incorporated in 1950, taking its name from former Birmingham Mayor, George Battey Ward’s estate high atop Shades Mountain, also named “Vestavia Hills.” Vestavia’s most famous landmark is Sibyl Temple, which visitors see when coming to the city from Birmingham. The town saw many years of steady growth and when the Red Mountain Expressway was built in 1977 the town, now a city, founded their own award winning school system. Through the selective annexations of the Rocky Ridge and Altadena areas in the 1980’s, Liberty Park in 1992 and Cahaba Heights in 2002, the city now claims well over 30,000 residents. Homes can be found between $150,000 up to well over a million dollars in the older area of Vestavia Hills and the newer, upscale area of Vestavia Hills known as Liberty Park. The award winning Vestavia Hills school system is popular with parents because of its academic excellence, incredible academic facilities, championship athletic programs and successful math and debate teams.
