About Birmingham
Nestled into the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, Birmingham was born at a railroad crossing in 1871 and quickly grew, as if by sheer magic, into an industrial powerhouse by the early 1900’s, by virtue of the rich stores of iron ore, coal and limestone as well as manufactured items such as rails and cast iron pipe. Birmingham got its nickname, “The Magic City” as a result of the “magical” population growth that occurred from 1871 through the Great Depression. In 1943, the University Hospital System was founded and significantly diversified the city’s economy and it has grown to become Birmingham’s largest employer and one of the most respected research Hospitals in the country. Though the steel industry no longer has the same prominence that it once held in Birmingham, steel production and processing continue to play a major role in the local economy.
Birmingham ranks as one of the most important and influential business and banking centers in the nation. In fact, Innovation Depot, which is located in downtown Birmingham, is home to one of the most successful non-profit business incubation programs for emerging service and light manufacturing firms in the United States. Some of the largest employers in Birmingham include, AT&T (formerly Bellsouth), UAB Medical Center, Regions Bank, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama, and many more. In addition, many residents commute to the Mercedes Benz and Honda plants that located within 35 miles of Birmingham.
Birmingham is an exciting place to live and is known as the cultural and entertainment capital of Alabama. Birmingham has many activities for the entire family including the Birmingham Museum of Art, McWane Science Center, Birmingham Zoo, Vulcan Park, Sloss Furnace, Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, Alabama School of Fine Arts, Alys Stephens Center for the Performing Arts, the Alabama Ballet, and the Alabama Symphony Orchestra. The downtown area is going through a renewal, with nearly a billion dollars being invested in the city center, creating a multi-use area with entertainment, shopping, parks, restaurants and downtown living spaces. The outlying areas provide multiple suburban living options that are convenient to schools, shopping, parks and restaurants.
